Vision and Belief
We strive to be a part of the community of God described by Jesus Christ, marked by justice and mercy, peace and joy. We believe we will achieve that when we love as Jesus taught us, to love God with all our heart and soul and mind and strength and to love our neighbors as ourselves.
We seek to be an inclusive community. Everyone is welcome – no matter who you are or what you have. Someone likened Union to a community-gathering place, "a house without a key." Our facilities are often used by the community. At the same time, we are a church without walls, practicing our faith in our daily lives – no matter where we are or what we are doing.
We come from a variety of backgrounds. As individuals and as a church, where we have been is not as important as where we are going.
Some of the beliefs that unite us:
- The God we worship is the One we have come to know most clearly through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ;
- It is not easy to be Christian, God’s Spirit challenges as well as comforts us;
- The Bible contains the stories that help us grow in our faith, to understand ourselves and our relationship to God and others. We take it seriously but not literally;
- We are stewards of God’s creation, seeking peace and prosperity for all God’s children;
- We are inquiring people. We grow from the experiences we share, our use of reason, and the traditions that teach us. All questions are welcome. Imagination is encouraged.
- Union is an open and affirming community. We treat one another and those of other faiths and traditions with respect. We enjoy life and invite everyone to join us, all ages, tongues, races, abilities, and sexual orientations.
Come grow with us – in every way!
