The S.M.A.R.T. program -- Success in Math, Art, Reading and Tutoring, formerly called SCEEP – is preparing to welcome back 14 students from the Sussex Avenue School in Newark, fourth graders who began the program two years ago. We will continue a tradition of Union support going back more than 30 years, in which the children are brought to Union one afternoon a week, where we work with them on homework, provide healthy snacks, bring in guest speakers and artists, and enjoy an occasional field trip.
We are looking for volunteers! We meet on Thursdays from 3-5 PM during the school year (beginning in October) in the Vincent Building. Our volunteers, aka tutors, are high schoolers from 9th grade and up, and adults of all ages. We would like to continue being able to pair each child with a consistent tutor. With your help we can do this!
If the weekly commitment isn’t possible, please consider volunteering in some other way, such as bringing a snack, or suggesting or giving a presentation. To learn more, please contact Cindy Stavitsky, Jeannette Miller, or Karen Lundry, or express your interest to Ann Ayre at the church office.
