January 5-6,
2008 —15 Senior High youth and 4 mentors traveled to Manhattan
for an urban plunge. Youth Service Opportunities Project,
a Quaker-run organization, linked us with three different projects
throughout the city, spreading from the Bronx to the West Village
to Queens. Youth volunteered in feeding programs, cooking, serving
and sharing lunch with primarily homeless populations. In the process,
we gained a closer glimpse at urban poverty.
Our experience of the city did not end with the day of service.
We walked to Chinatown for dinner, then saw the show Fuerza Bruta—a
postmodern experience that involved acrobats, music, dance, and
lots of indoor rain.
We were hosted overnight by the minister of Judson Memorial Church,
a UCC-affiliated congregation, in their parsonage. In the morning
we worshiped at Judson, where we shared an Agape Love Feast.
