Rachel a new musical: Friday, Jan 19 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, Jan 20 at 7:30 pm (Assembly Room). Rachel is an original musical about biologist and nature writer Rachel Carson, author of "Silent Spring," which sparked the modern environmental movement. Carson (b. 1907 - d. 1964) struggled as a female scientist. Her skills as a writer eventually brought her success and critical acclaim. But when the destructive nature of DDT and other pesticides was brought to her attention Carson jeopardized her success, health, and relationships to take a stand for the earth. This exciting production is co-produced by Ari Laura Keith, Artistic Director of Theatre 167 in NYC and a recent Montclair transplant and friend of Union, and the UCC Players.
Bag It the movie: Sunday, Feb 11 after the service (Assembly Room). Bag It follows Jeb Berrier an average American who decides to take a closer look at our cultural love affair with plastics. Jeb's journey in this documentary film starts with simple questions: Are plastic bags really necessary? What are plastic bags made from? What happens to plastic bags after they are discarded? Jeb discovers that virtually everything in modern society is made with plastic or contains potentially harmful chemical additives. When Jeb's journey takes a personal twist, we see how our crazy-for-plastic world has finally caught up with us and what we can do about it.
