Communion
We observe two sacraments: communion and baptism. All are
welcome at the communion table which we understand to be God’s not ours. Communion education for children is offered the last Sunday of September in preparation for Worldwide Communion Sunday, the first Sunday in October. Our Stepping Stone class for 5th graders also concentrates on this sacrament.
Communion is based on the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his disciples on the night before his death.
It was a Passover meal celebrating God’s deliverance of our Jewish forbearers from slavery in Egypt. Sometimes called the Eucharist, from the Greek word for thanksgiving, it reminds us of all the good gifts that God has given us and especially of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus told us to share communion in remembrance of him: the broken bread reminding us of his body, the shared cup reminding us of our covenant with God.
At Union Cong we use grape juice at all communion services and gluten free wafers are available.
Communion is shared every Sunday at the 8:30 service, and the 1st Sunday of the month at the 10:00 service. We also celebrate communion at these special services:
