Communion

Serving The Sacraments

We have resumed our monthly celebration of communion. Communion is typically served the 1st Sunday of the month at the 10:00 service. All are welcome at the communion table, which we understand to be God’s not ours. On-line worshippers should bring their own elements to their worship space so they can be blessed all together.

About Our Sacraments

We observe two sacraments: communion and baptism.

Communion

Communion education for children happens during World Communion Sunday, the first Sunday in October.

Communion is based on the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his disciples on the night before his death. It was a Passover meal celebrating God’s deliverance of our Jewish forbearers from slavery in Egypt. Sometimes called the Eucharist, from the Greek word for thanksgiving, it reminds us of all the good gifts that God has given us and especially of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus told us to share communion in remembrance of him. The broken bread reminds us of his body; the shared cup reminds us of our covenant with God.

At Union Cong we use grape juice at all communion services and gluten-free, nut-free bread.

Communion is typically served the 1st Sunday of the month at the 10:00 service, but may also be celebrated at these special services:

  • Worldwide Communion day
  • First Sunday of Advent
  • Ash Wednesday
  • First Sunday of Lent
  • Maundy Thursday
  • Confirmation Sunday
  • Pentecost
